Favorite Fall Hikes

Flagstaff is Arizona’s secret autumn paradise. The weather starts to cool down, but the sunshine still kisses the forest floor, making fall hiking an absolute dream. From gorgeous mountain vistas to meandering foot trails, Flagstaff is the perfect destination for fall hiking and leaf peeping!

Bonus: you can take your dog almost anywhere!

Dr.Dobbin loves Abineau Bearjaw and Mount Humphreys hikes

If you’re looking for a fabulous fall hike that packs a punch, Abineau Bearjaw is the loop for you! Not only will you get those blazing fall colors, but you will also get to experience some rugged Flag fun! The dirt road leading up to the trail could be treacherous if you don’t have very high clearance, so be cautious. High-energy pups and humans can enjoy this trail all year, but we recommend checking out the fall colors before all the leaves fall!

Humphreys Peak is a famous and challenging route to the highest point in all of Arizona. The 10.1 out-and-back trail is well worth the hike, but you need plenty of water and snacks for you and your four-legged friends. Even if you don’t go all the way to the summit, this route winds through ponderosa and aspens for a great fall adventure. Pro tip: pack dog booties for the scree near the top.

Dr. Thompson loves Fatman’s Loop and Picture Canyon

Fatman’s Loop is a moderately challenging hike and a local favorite. The 2.5-mile loop is perfect for mountain biking, hiking, or running with your dog! This well-makered route is wonderful in the fall because it can be pretty exposed in parts. The hard climbs make the views even sweeter!

Picture Canyon is packed with history. There are many options to explore this cultural preserve, and all are dog-friendly! The Tom Moody Loop is a pleasant hike with Sinagua petroglyphs and other cultural motifs along the route. It is relatively flat and mostly dirt, making it a perfect option for older dogs!

Dr. Bruchman loves Lockett Meadow and Aspen Loop up at Snowbowl

If you’re on a mission to see fall colors in Flagstaff, Lockett Meadow and Aspen Loop at Snowbowl need to be on your radar. Lockett Meadow is the more challenging of the two, but both boast beautiful fall foliage. Lockett’s elevation gain is pretty significant, so plan ahead if you want to hike it this fall.

Aspen Loop at Snowbowl is a magical little loop right near the ski lifts. You’ll know you’re in the right place because it tends to draw a crowd! But don’t worry— after you make it through the main aspen grove, the crowds thin out. There are still wonderful sights along the rest of the loop, and your dog will thank you for taking them the whole way!
