Exclusive Benefits of Our Packages

When it’s time for your puppy or kitten’s spay/neuter surgery, we’ve got some awesome features you need to know about!

At Continental Animal Wellness Center, we use a surgical laser for all procedures instead of a traditional scalpel. This means less bleeding, less pain, and faster healing. Plus, every pet gets a cold laser therapy session after surgery to help with pain and speed up recovery.

Our packages also include a full anesthesia plan, which covers pre-surgery anti-nausea meds, pain relief during the procedure, and take-home medications to keep your pet comfortable.

While you’re enrolled, we’ll check in with you every 3-4 weeks to answer any questions and make sure you have all the support you need to give your new furry friend the best start in life!

The Importance of the Leptospirosis Vaccine

To kick off 2025, the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) updated its vaccination guidelines, making the Leptospirosis vaccine a core vaccine for all dogs nationwide. So, to stay in line with this new standard, we now recommend the Leptospirosis vaccine for all our canine patients.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection spread through the urine of infected wildlife, often found in stagnant water or from eating infected animals. It can cause serious kidney failure in dogs and, since it’s zoonotic, can also spread to humans.

Our vaccine protects against the four most common strains of Leptospira. It starts as a two-dose series given 3-4 weeks apart (starting at 12 weeks old) and requires an annual booster. If more than 15 months pass between boosters, the series must restart. This vaccine is highly effective, has minimal side effects, and is now recommended for all dogs, no matter their lifestyle or location.

5 Early Veterinary Care FAQs

Does early veterinary care ensure a healthy foundation for lifelong well-being?

Yes! Early vet visits help prevent diseases, detect health issues early, and establish good habits. Vaccinations, parasite prevention, and routine check-ups set the stage for a healthier, longer life. Starting vet care early also helps pets get comfortable with handling and medical care.

Which vaccinations do kittens and puppies receive with early vet care?

Puppies typically receive DA2PP (distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus, parainfluenza), Bordetella, rabies, and leptospirosis vaccines. Kittens get FVRCP (feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, panleukopenia), feline leukemia (FeLV), and rabies. These vaccines protect against serious, sometimes fatal diseases and are given in a series of boosters to build strong immunity.

Which parasites do puppies and kittens need to be tested for?

Common parasites include roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, coccidia, and giardia. Puppies and kittens should have fecal testing to detect these parasites, as some can spread to humans. Heartworm testing is also essential for dogs once they reach six months of age.

How does deworming work in cats and dogs?

Deworming involves giving oral or topical medications that eliminate parasites like roundworms and hookworms. Puppies and kittens typically receive multiple deworming treatments since they can be born with worms. Regular deworming and fecal testing help prevent reinfection and keep pets (and their families) healthy.

If my pets are not vaccinated, which diseases are they at risk of?

Unvaccinated pets are vulnerable to serious and often deadly diseases, many of which are highly contagious.

  • Leptospirosis: Bacterial infection spread through wildlife urine, leading to kidney and liver damage. It can also infect humans.
  • Feline Leukemia (FeLV): A virus that weakens a cat’s immune system, making them prone to infections and cancer.
  • Parvovirus: A severe, often fatal virus in dogs that causes extreme vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration.
  • Rabies: A fatal virus affecting the nervous system, spread through bites. Deadly to pets and humans; vaccination is required by law.
  • Distemper (Dogs & Cats): A highly contagious virus affecting the respiratory, digestive, and nervous systems, often leading to death.
  • Kennel Cough (Bordetella – Dogs): A respiratory infection causing a harsh cough, common in social settings like dog parks and boarding facilities.
  • Panleukopenia (Feline Parvo): A deadly virus in cats, similar to parvovirus in dogs, causing severe vomiting, diarrhea, and immune system failure.
  • Canine Influenza: A highly contagious respiratory virus that causes fever, coughing, and pneumonia, especially in social dogs.
